
In April, May and June this year, the second quarter of 2023, the National Council for Civic Education and Democracy with support from United Nation Development program (UNDP), implemented “YOUTH AT RISK” for community resilience and peace building project activities in the North and Eastern Region of the country.
The purpose of the program was to provide civic education training to vulnerable youths in selected communities in Kenema and Tonkolili District, to facilitate youth participation in governance and to prepare beneficiaries who are mainly youth for the 24th June multi-tier elections, so that they will keep the peace before , during and after the June 2023 .
In Kenema District, the two Chiefdoms selected were Dama and Nongowa with 183 beneficiaries initially but when two communities were again added (Combema , Mano Junction), the number of beneficiaries rose to 245. In Tonkolili also two Chiefdoms were selected, Kholifa Rowalla and Yoni Chiefdoms. However, with the addition of new communities like Masenge, Mafanta for Rowalla and Rochen and Gaindema for Yoni, the sum total of beneficiaries amounted to 344.
Some of the activities undertaken during this period include the following: Non formal civic education and leadership training, Duty-Bearer Dialogue Forum, Open Space Edutainment Session, Media Engagement and Workshop for Peace Ambassadors and peer Educator for Community Outreach.
