In a significant move to strengthen institutional collaboration and effective partnership work, the leadership of the National Council for Civic Education and Democracy (NaCCED) paid a high-level courtesy visit to the newly appointed Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha. The engagement, which took place on Thursday, 9th April, 2026, at the Commission’s Headquarters at Tower Hill, Freetown, served as a formal platform for both institutions to align their strategic goals. The NaCCED delegation was led by its Chairman, Mr. Joseph Munda Bindi, accompanied by Mr. Francis Gbatima Kobbie, Director of Human Resources and Administration, and Memunatu Bangura, the Acting Director of Communication and Outreach. During the meeting, Chairman Joseph Munda Bindi formally congratulated Mr. Alpha on his new role and reaffirmed NaCCED’s unwavering commitment to collaborating with the Commission on its various nationwide initiatives. He noted that the synergy between civic education and electoral processes is the bedrock of transparent, inclusive, and participatory democratic elections. Chairman reaffirmed NaCCED’s commitment to providing robust civic engagement support for the Commission’s upcoming electoral processes. He emphasized that a synchronized approach to voter education and civic awareness is essential for maintaining the integrity of the nation’s democratic processes. “Our Council stands ready to partner with the Commission to ensure that every citizen is reached with the necessary information to participate meaningfully in our democracy,” Mr. Bindi remarked. In response, the Chief Electoral Commissioner and Chairman, Edmond Sylvester Alpha, expressed his gratitude for the visit and provided a detailed report regarding the Commission’s current activities and its roadmap for the 2028 electoral cycle. Mr. Alpha emphasized the importance of inter-agency cooperation in building public trust and ensuring operational efficiency. In a major highlight of the meeting, the Chief Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha, issued a key policy statement aimed at strengthening the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the ECSL and NaCCED. Mr. Alpha emphasized that reinforcing this partnership is essential for improving voter literacy and ensuring the Commission’s activities are well-understood by the public. “This partnership is vital as we begin the foundational work for the next general elections, focusing on transparency and comprehensive electoral education,” Mr. Alpha stated. The Chief Electoral Commissioner was accompanied by his newly appointed Executive Secretary, Mr. Tucker, alongside the Commissioner of the Eastern Region, Mr. Alex Saffa. Also in attendance were the Director of External Relations and the Director of Electoral Education, both of whom will play key roles in the joint civic strategy moving forward. Chairman Joseph Munda Bindi responded by pledging NaCCED’s full technical and operational support. He noted that for democracy to thrive, citizens must not only vote but understand the value of their vote, a goal that can only be achieved through the combined efforts of the ECSL, NaCCED, and all stakeholders in the election management processes. The meeting concluded with a formal handover of a comprehensive update concerning the Commission’s ongoing projects. This session signals a new era of transparency and proactive collaboration, ensuring that as the Commission moves forward, the Sierra Leonean public remains informed, educated, and engaged.
