
Chairman for National Council for Civic Education and Democracy (NaCCED), Joseph Munda Bindi and team have paid a courtesy call on the National Coordinator of Sierra Leone Free Education Project Secretariat (FEPS). Key among the purposes of the meeting is to acquaint with the Secretariat and strengthen the already existing relationship between the two institutions.
The National Coordinator for the Free Education Project Secretariat (FEPS), Mr. Ambrose T. Sesay welcomed NaCCED Chairman and team at his S.S Camp office in Freetown noting that he is pleased to work with NaCCED to ensure that the collaboration in service delivery especially on the achievement of Civic Education in schools as it is key in the government’s agenda.
Mr Sesay noted that Civic education was for long time not included in the school curriculum but appreciated President Julius Maada Bio for his proclamation for the reintroduction of Civics in schools.
According to the National Coordinator for FEPS, Civic Education plays a pivotal role in society as it ensures the right message is passed to the public at the right time.
Mr. Ambrose Sesay reiterated that FEPS supports government and government assisted schools across the country to ensure quality education while emphasizing their commitment to working with NaCCED to promote Civic Education in schools.
In his response, the Chairman of NaCCED Mr. Joseph Munda Bindi appreciated the National Coordinator for the warm gesture stating that FEPS is part of the reason why NaCCED was created.
Chairman Bindi cited one of the ways President Bio planned to tackle lawlessness was the establishment of NaCCED to help have a well-informed citizenry with positive mindset for the betterment of Sierra Leone.
The Chairman further said he is impressed with the achievements of FEPS while thanking the National Coordinator for their supports over the years adding that the resources were well utilized for their intended purposes.
He further updated Mr. Sesay on the latest validation on the assessment report on teaching Civics in schools that was undertaken by an independent consultant, the Institute of Governance Reform (IGR) which contains successes, challenges and recommendations on the progress of civics in schools so far.
According to the Chairman, NaCCED is planning to take a practical approach of civics in schools to ensure children put into practice most of the things taught in classroom adding that amidst these plans there are limited resources.
He added that there are plans to better involve the informal sector and private schools in civic education to ensure inclusivity and to leave no one behind in the development of the country.
Director of Curriculum Development and Training at NaCCED, Mr. Alphan Alieu Tajawie also commended the National Coordinator of FEPS for their contributions in promoting Civic education in schools adding that their support will also be needed to help in the implementation of some of the recommendations in the report on Civic education after its publication.
