
The Chairman for the National Council for Civic Education and Democracy has played host to the new Minister of Information of the Republic of The Gambia. During the visit, the Chairman of NaCCED informed the Minister and his team about the numerous civic functions of NaCCED since its establishment in 2018 by a proclamation of President Julius Maada Bio.
The Chairman said that with the initiative of His Excellency President Bio, he was given the mandate to actualize the President’s vision of developing a curriculum and syllabus on Civic Education and the reintroduction of same as a subject of teaching and learning in schools at the basic education level. He told the visiting delegation that Civics is now being taught as a stand-alone subject in schools. He said his institution has published a set of seven civic text books and has also trained over 3,000 teachers across the country that are now teaching the subject in schools.
Minister Ismaila Ceesay explained to his audience that the purpose of the visit was to understand the information and civic architecture of Sierra Leone as he assumed office few months ago. He added that as the new Minister, there are plans to revive the act of bringing government to the people and creating a mechanism of information sharing between the government and the public, review laws and make reforms where possible.
Mr. Ceesay said in his role as a Minister, with agencies under his purview some reforms require learning from what is already being implemented by NaCCED for better and fruitful replication back in the Gambia.
The Minister together with his team from the Republic of The Gambia and staff of the National Council for Civic education and Democracy benefitted from the experience sharing.
