
National Council for Civic Education and Development (NaCCED) in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), held the 61st Independence Anniversary National Inter-Secondary Schools Quiz Competition (2nd edition). Thirty junior secondary schools where selected from all five regions of the country. The competition for schools in the provinces was held on May 5th 2022, whilst schools in Freetown had their competitions on 5th and 6th of May at the Freetown City Council Hall, Wallace Johnson Street.
Addressing the gathering at the Freetown City Council Hall, the Chairman of NaCCED Mr. Ibrahim Kalilu Totangi expressed thanks to the guests, pupils and teachers for gracing the occasion amidst the current teachers’ sit-down strike action. He informed them about the seven (7) civic text books that have been produced by the Council and expressed hope that, ” civics will become a core subject in schools next year.” He said, ” last year the competition was very tense and hope it will be even more tense this year.”
Due to the current teachers’ strike, only six out of the ten selected schools from Freetown participated in the competition. The schools include, the Government Secondary School King Tom, Freetown Secondary School for Girls (FSSG), Dr. June Holst Roness Junior Secondary School, Prince of Wales (POW), Annie Walsh Memorial School (AWMS) and the Services Secondary School-Juba. Out of the six schools that competed on the first day of the competition, four qualified for the grand finale on the sixth.
At the end of that competition in Freetown, the Annie Walsh Memorial Secondary School emerged winner with 46 points and Government Secondary School King Tom was the first runner-up with 44 points. POW scored 43 points and was declared second runner-up and FSSG had 37 points.
Certificates were distributed to all pupils that competed, as well as a plaque for the second runner-up and trophy each for the winner and the first runner-up. A representative from the military, the teachers and the executive of tribal heads men were called up on to do the presentations.
The Executive of the Tribal Head Men in the Western Area Chief Matthew Younge, before presenting the plaque, commended NaCCED for organizing the competition which he described as very educative not just for the pupils but for all those that were present at the auditorium. “For the two days I have been in this auditorium, it has been very educative.” He said “the act of learning never gets old and everyone learns something new until death”. Chief Younge encouraged NaCCED to replicate the competition for pupils in primary school level.
Samuel Wise Bangura presenter at the AYV Television and Patricia Conteh Media coordinator at NaCCED served as quiz masters here in Freetown, whilst Thomas Johnny, Director of Programs and research moderated the event.
In the South Region- Bo city, Christ the King College (CKC) emerged as winner with 46 points and in the North Western Region -Port Loko, Educaid Secondary School won with 53 points. In the North Eastern Region- Baptist Secondary School won with 46 points and in the Eastern Region, Government Secondary School Kenema won with 44 points.
